Symptoms of Urinary Tract Infections in Pets
Urinary tract infections in pets can cause urination to be extremely painful and uncomfortable. These infections are caused when normal bacteria from the skin or gastrointestinal system enter the urethra, bladder or any part of the urinary tract. These infections can lead to messes that frustrate pet owners and cause anxiety and discomfort for pets.
Urinary tract infections affect both dogs and cats, although they tend to be more common in cats. Female cats and dogs may experience more episodes of urinary tract infections because the urethra is shorter and broader than that of their male counterparts.
Increased frequency of urination, straining to urinate and constant licking at the urinary opening could be signs of a urinary tract problem in your cat or dog. Lethargy or weight loss due to changes in appetite can also be symptoms of a urinary tract problem.
The most common symptoms related to urinary tract infections include straining to urinate, urinating with pain - which may be indicated by crying out during urination1 - licking of genitals, cloudy or bloody urine, urinating only drops or in odd places, and loss of appetite.
Other Treatments for Common Symptoms of Urinary Tract Infections in Pets
Help support your pet's bladder and urinary tract health with these tips:
- Make sure your pet gets bathroom breaks every few hours to keep them from having to hold it in for too long.
- Give your pet plenty of fresh, clean water to keep them hydrated and to help flush out toxins.
- Feed your pet a healthy, all-natural diet without preservatives, colorants or additives, and avoid abruptly changing your pet's diet.
- Consult your vet on the best diet for a pet that develops UTIs frequently. For cats, canned food may support healthy urination better than dry food1.
- Ensure good hygiene by bathing your pet regularly, especially female pets.
- Make sure your pet gets plenty of exercise to stimulate the bladder and stay generally healthy.
- For cats, keep more than one litter box at home and make sure they're always clean.
- Put litter boxes in a safe, quiet place.
